Preface

I do not wish to interpret the Qur’an, nor do I consider myself capable of undertaking such a great responsibility. Rather, I would describe this work as an attempt to compile the interpretations of the Qur’an in English. In my early life, my teacher once shared with me the biography of Abu Hanifa (R). I was deeply amazed by his life and was inspired to dream of becoming a writer like him. To fulfill that dream, I began preparing myself to write something about Islam. I found that the Tafsirs written in Arabic are sufficient for us; however, I also noticed that many of them contain numerous contradictory opinions, interpretations, and ideas. This made it difficult for me to distinguish between authentic and essential guidance in the Qur’an. When I turned to the English translations and interpretations of the Qur’an, I found myself even more puzzled and confused.

It seemed to me that most translators of the Qur’an and Tafsir carried out their works with little care, except for a few. In some cases, I found that the English translations were not directly rendered from the Arabic text, but rather from existing translations or secondary languages. This practice has been prevalent in Bangladesh, where numerous translators produced English versions of the Qur’an, Tafsir, and other important Islamic works based on translations in Bangla, Urdu, Farsi, or other languages. As a result, the English translations often failed to reflect the true meaning of the original Arabic text of the Qur’an.

For this reason, I felt a strong calling in my heart to write something on the Tafsir of the Qur’an in English based on its original language—Arabic—so that it may benefit those who sincerely want to understand the Qur’an correctly in English. Therefore, I have engaged myself in compiling and translating information from various authentic Arabic books of Tafsir, Hadith, Fiqh, and Islamic history into English. My aim is to uncover the true meaning, ideas, and interpretations of the Qur’an in light of authentic Hadith with the help of widely known authentic books.

It is important to mention here that I am not a Mujtahid (مجتهد). Today, we have a sufficient number of authentic Islamic books readily available, so I feel there is no need to write a new Tafsir with new ideas. Rather, the need of the time is to collect, compile, and present authentic information in a clear way. With this understanding, I have undertaken this effort, relying solely upon my Rab.

I am a follower of the Hanafi Madhhab (مذهب). In matters of jurisprudence, I have presented only the opinions of the Hanafi Madhhab (مذهب), supported by clear and irrefutable evidence from the Qur’an and Hadith.

I seek Allah’s help and mercy in this endeavor and pray that He accepts it as a means of my salvation in Akhirah, along with my father, Md. Yunus (رحمة الله عليه), my mother, Mahmuda Begum (حفظها الله ومدّ الله حياتها), my wife, Shahnaj Begum, who encouraged and fully supported me (حفظها الله ومدّ الله حياتها), and my son, Muhammad Jawad Zin-Noor (حفظه الله ومدّ الله حياته). They, along with my family members, friends, and teachers, are my source of inspiration.
