 Different Meaning of Ad-Deen (ألدين):

Zujaj Abu Ishaq Ibrahim Ibnus Sari described in his book:

ألدين فى اللغة الجزاء يقال كما تدين تدان المعنى كما تعمل تعطى وتجازى

كما قال الشاعر: وأعلم وأيقن أن ملكك زائل           واعلم بأن كما تدين تدان   أى تجازى بما تفعل

Ad-Deen (ألدين) means in the dictionary- reward/recompense, as it is said in Arabic- كما تدين تدان means –as you do, so you will be given and rewarded. (In English proverb: “As you sow, so will you reap”). As the poet said:   Know and be firm that your kingdom will perish, and know that as you do, so you will be given. It means: You will be rewarded for what you do. (Ref 1)

Allah the Almighty said about الدين in Surah Al-Infitar:

وما أدرك ما يوم الدين- 17 ثم ما أدرك ما يوم الدين-18  يوم لا تملك نفس لنفس شيئا والأمر يومئذ لله-19

What thing will make you know what the day of recompense (يوم الدين) is? Then what thing will make you know what the day of recompense (يوم الدين) is? The day when no one shall have the power to do anything for another, and command shall be entirely for Allah. (No one will have the power to order or prohibit) (Surah Al-Infitar-17, 18 &19).

2. Reward for good and evil:

As it is described in Sahih Al-Bukhari:

وفى الصحيح  البخارى الدين الجزاء فى الخير والشر كما تدين تدان وقال مجاهد بالدين (الماعون-1) بالحساب مدينين (الواقعة-81) محاسبين

In Sahih Al-Bukhari, الدين means the reward for good and evil. As it is said in the conversation of the Arabian people: “As you do, so shall it be done to you,” it means you will be rewarded for your actions, and according to what you have done. Mujahid said, “بالدين” means “With account” (Al-Ma’un: 1). مدينين means “People who are reckoned and recompensed” (Al-Waqi’ah: 81) (Ref 2)

Jubran Masud described in his dictionary:

الدين ج اديان  يوم الدين-يوم الحساب

الدين: Plural- اديان- means :

3. Reckoning يوم الدين means –the day of reckoning.(Ref.3)

4. Accounting in a straightforward way:

قال إبن عباس وإبن مسعودوالحسن البصرى والسدى ومقاتل هو الحساب كما فى قوله تعالى ذالك الدين القيم (ألتوبة-36) أى الحساب المستقيم

Ibn Abbas, Ibn Masud, Al-Hasan Al-Basri, As-Suddi, and Muqatil said: Deen means accounting, as it is in Allah’s saying, ذالك الدين القيم “That is the right Deen ” (Al-Tawbah-36). Here, Deen means “The straightforward accounting or simple calculation ”.(Ref 4)

Abu Hafs Najmuddin Umar Ibn Muhammad Ibn Ahmad An-Nasafi Al-Hanafi described in his Tafsir:

والدين الجزاء وهو على شيئين على الطاعة بالثواب وعلى المعصية بالعقاب ودل قوله مالك يوم الدين على الشيئين

And الدين means “Reward”, which will be on two things: reward for obedience, and punishment for disobedience. Allah’s saying مالك يوم الدين indicates these two things. (Ref 5)

Different meanings of the word الدين Ad-Deen:

Jubran Masud described in his dictionary:

الدين ج اديان : عبادة الله وتقديسه –ألمذهب –السيرة

الدين: Plural- اديان- means :

1. Allah’s Ibadah and His sanctification.

2. Mazhab ألمذهب (The way of leading life, in short a complete way of life is called Ad-Deen)

3. Biography (السيرة) (Ref 3)

4. Obidence in a humiliating manner:

Ibn Jarir At-Tabari described in his Tafsir about the meaning of الدين in Allah’s saying إن الدين عند الله الإسلام:

ومعنى فى هذا الموضع :الطاعة والذلة  من قول الشاعر :

ويوم الحزن إذ حشدت معد          وكان الناس إلا نحن دينا     يعنى بذالك مطيعين على وجه الذل

“And on the day of grief, when the tribes of Ma'ad had gathered their armies, all the people disobeyed, but we obeyed. It means, we were obedient to them in a humiliating manner”.

وقول الأعشى ميمون بن قيس :

هو دان الرباب إذ كرهوا الدين

Page-61

يعنى بقوله: دان-ذلل وبقوله –كرهوا الدين :ألطاعة

And the saying of Al-A’sha Maymun bin Qais:

He is the one who subdued the people of the Rebab tribe when they refused obedience. His saying: دان means: Subdued, and كرهوا الدين means: They disliked the obedience. (So, here Ad-Deen means: obedience). (Ref 6)
